Making Avatars Dance: Transcript
In this week's episode of "Extended Play" we introduce you to the
movement artists of San Francisco's Capacitor, whose inspiration stems from
the technology around us. Capacitor recently performed "Avatars,"
a dance piece based on the five elemental energies and on videogames. We were
there for a glimpse at the dance and spoke with Capacitor's artistic director,
Jodi Lomask.
"'Avatars' is a full evening show that we, at Capacitor, built,"
Lomask explains. "It's inspired by videogames and the journey of five
characters from birth, through challenges, becoming heroes, to rebirth."
How did this show come about?
"I've always been interested in new technology and in fantasy,"
Lomask says. "So much has developed n videogames over the last few years.
It's really such a creative field. Almost anything can be achieved now. As
a choreographer I find that really inspiring."
"I also wanted to work on a videogame show was because I was excited
about choreographing fight scenes and I also wanted to work with motion capture,"
Lomask admits.
What's the story line?
"In the very beginning [of the dance] a player is drawn into the game
and she is told that she needs to find each element," Lomask explains.
"Then in a dark scene she runs into each element during their moment
of darkness. Then the fights begin as she battles the elements and she plays
each of the characters."
Why videogames?
"I like exploring what we're learning culturally from videogames because
itheir presence is obviously getting stronger and stronger," Lomask says.
