Dance-music culture = has been=20 evolving for the last 25 years, emerging from the gay = discos=20 of the '70s to serve as the soundtrack for countless = movies=20 and commercials. Yet not until recently has the = mainstream=20 media, which previously saw our music as faceless and = our=20 scene as disposable, recognized our music as a = justified art=20 form instead of a passing fad.=20

Well, hold on to your = turntables,=20 boys and girls, because this very column before you is = just=20 the beginning. As Sunshine Jones=20 said in last week's profile of Imperial Dub=20 Recordings, "House=20 music is about to ring from every mountaintop." Amen, = brotha'!

Showtime and filmmaker = Kira Kelly = have been traveling = around the=20 country shooting interviews with local DJs. The = results will=20 air as two-minute short features that will be = scheduled=20 between programs on the new cable channel they plan to = launch=20 later this year. Kira was in town recently to meet = with SF=20 spinsters DJ Icon,=20 Star Eyes = and others.=20 Be on the lookout for Mix profiles of some of our = city's=20 finest turntable talent!=20

Nightlife's in-crowd must = have=20 handed off the clubland baton to the city's art = community on=20 their way to SFO last week. While the who's who of=20 nightclubbing were soaking up golden Miami rays at = this year's=20 Winter Music Conference, creative boys and girls at = home were=20 busy further blurring the lines between dance, music, = art and=20 fashion. A few artist and dancer collectives have = decided to=20 wear the promoter hat, extending beyond the = traditional=20 gallery showing or theater performance to organize = club-like=20 events that integrate an array of audio and visual = elements.

ArtAngels, a charity website = where people=20 interested in preserving this city's art scene can = contribute=20 to arts organizations online, celebrated its launch = with a=20 party at SomArts that included everything from modern = dance=20 and live theater to photography and interactive = multi-media=20 presentations. DJs Lorin, Tree=20 and Paul = Godwin=20 spun the = inspiring=20 freaky beats for art enthusiasts and newcomers hooched = up on=20 Redtails. The night featured performances by some of = this=20 city's most cutting-edge performance artists -- = ODC and Capacitor, to name two -- and = tripped out=20 art installations, the likes of which will surely = grace the=20 global village at this year's Burning Man festival.

Laura & = Pedro=20 took over Pieter=20 Kruit's = Light bar last Thursday to = host=20 Aereal.Music=20 and give friend Luke=20 Baker a = chance to=20 show off his 2001 collection. Pretty boy Dylan, All-J, Freeze=20 Transformations and=20 JeffroDeezJack=20 encouraged fashionistas in Vanderbilt Jeans and = feathered hair=20 to do the robot, packing the dance floor with = bootylicious=20 electro beats.

Capacitor, an SF-based = group of=20 "interdisciplinary movement artists", organized a = "next=20 generation dance party," Flux Capacitor, at King = Street,=20 transforming the venue from an ordinary nightclub into = a=20 performance space and summoning the disco brigade - = Ellen=20 Ferrato, Kramer, Chameleon and Ethan Miller - to = provide the=20 appropriate wattage for their electrically charged=20 performance. The group used brief breaks during DJ = sets to=20 tell the story of the creation of our universe using=20 beautifully choreographed dance pieces that = incorporated=20 elements of Capoeira, a form of martial arts, = acrobatics,=20 flames and even bungee chords set to a space-age = soundtrack=20 composed by Thomas=20 Day and=20 electronic-cello player Alex Kort.=20 Ellen = Ferratto=20 threw = down a set of=20 twisted house so tight she had kids bouncing off the = walls.=20 Even the boys in line for the toilet couldn't keep = still. So=20 waiting for the first performance, I was unsure how = the=20 dance-happy crowd was going to respond to the = interruptions=20 and afraid that the artistic value of modern dance = might fly=20 right over their heads and the time be used instead to = grab=20 another drink at the bar or go outside to have a = smoke. It was=20 clear just minutes into the first performance, = however, that=20 the talent before us was undeniable. Judging from the=20 deafening applause and screams following each set, = Capacitor's=20 accomplished its mission to expose its work to a new = audience.=20 A far cry from the almost sideshow acts of rave = yesteryear, is=20 this a promising evolution of our club scene? Let's = hope so.

Meanwhile, Putanesca hung some taffeta on = the walls of=20 Traxx, a divey Haight Street gay bar, and called it = Pork. Art?=20 Maybe. Fun? Most definitely! Gay boys crammed in to = the small=20 space to hoot and holler for SF's favorite gender = bending=20 divas. Veronica Klaus=20 did her = blues thing.=20 Juanita=20 More = incited a drag=20 couture revolution and Pinky Ring=20 played the as always schizophrenic set of trashy = soundtracks,=20 pop-kitsch and dirty rock.=20
