The plugged-in future of dance never looked brighter than it did last spring,
when Merce Cunningham unveiled BIPED, a piece that broadcast oversized digital
images of moving dancers over the real thing. It's the kind of fusion we'll
see with increasing frequency as we move into the 21st century and the kind
of forward-thinking material that local performance troupe Capacitor expands
on with new work future species. A computer programming installation by Vainglorious
prepares viewers for the technological wonders that await, and Test adds multi-images
photographic projections and sound to the mix. Choreographer Jodi Lomask uses
technology metaphorically and literally: Costumes are emblazoned with the
schematic symbols of electrical wiring, suggesting the physical energy coursing
through the dancers' bodies, while at one point, the dancers are wired to
actual light bulbs. Aerialists and jugglers from Carnival of Chaos and the
UC Mens' Chorale performance of Pink Floyd's "What's the Deal" complete the
multimedia spectacle. (Heather Wiesner)
