STEM Portals provides an alternative way into science and math for young people by providing an embodied exploration using Capacitor's innovative cross-disciplinary approach. Through inquiry, movement, and Capacitor's signature sculptures, Portals aims to create a spark of curiosity and inspire more young people to pursue careers in STEM fields.

It all started when…

Since 1997, Capacitor has created and presented projects in collaboration with top research scientists covering topics like forest and ocean ecology, the biology of flowers, marine mammal communication and neuroscience.

We teach a variety of workshops for elementary, junior high, and high-school students which include a dance warm-up, physics/engineering lesson, art discussion, five-minute performance, and lots of physical and conceptual exploration. Students are left inspired to actualize their dreams and engage in creative problem solving.

Cross-Pollination at the California Academy of Sciences 2023

SF Unified School District High Schooler engage with Cross-Pollination at the California Academy of Sciences’ STEM Portals Workshop

I was surprised how dynamic the structure was, it was art and multi media at that. The uniqueness and variety of movement that could be done was super exciting. This experience taught me more about my body’s capability in terms of movement, and how to safely step out of my comfort zone. Thank you for this experience.

This work influenced my understanding of plants and their generative system - how dynamic it really is to grow. I now understand the complexity of nature - how it depends on one another to evolve and survive. From now on I will look at art and science collaboratively. It is enlightening to see how many perspectives you can see through.
